Cabinets are systems made from several materials. The box, back, shelves, drawer components, doors and finished panels may use different substrates because each part has different structural and finishing requirements.
Cabinet-grade plywood uses cross-laminated wood veneers. It is valued for strength and fastener holding, but grade, thickness, veneer quality and edge treatment vary. The word plywood alone does not describe a complete cabinet.
Medium-density fiberboard has a smooth, stable surface that can perform well under painted or thermofoil finishes. It has no wood grain and can create crisp routed profiles, although prolonged moisture exposure must be avoided.
Particleboard and other engineered panels can provide dimensional consistency and value when properly specified and protected. Density, thickness, coatings, edge banding and hardware engineering are more useful comparisons than broad assumptions about every engineered panel.
